Lessons are designed to teach students the basics of drawing with charcoal and graphite. Contour drawing, overall composition, tonal values such as lights and darks, shade and shadow are taught. Drawing subjects may include still life arrangements, landscape, architectural, or portraiture.
Learning to paint typically involves a basic drawing of some sort. Once there is a drawing to work with, you can learn the techniques of painting in different media: watercolor, pastels, oil and acrylic. It is not always a linear process. Painting is an exploration. Not every painting is a finished refined piece. Some paintings are simple outlines of a future more in-depth work of art. It’s helpful to study color theory, mixing and applying paint, and techniques for how to portray effects of light, space and texture.
